親愛なる友人の皆様、都響の楽員、聴衆の皆様

過去16か月の間に、私たち、そして沢山の方々が多くのものを失いました。私は音楽家として、私自身の経験からしか話すことはできませんが、多くの方々が私より、はるかに大きな苦みを経験していることを十分に承知しています。それでも、今回の訪日をキャンセルせざるを得なくなり、今週皆様と音楽を分かち合うことができなくなったことは非常に悲しい思いです。私の、日本、日本の音楽家、音楽愛好家の皆様への深い敬愛の気持ちは20年以上前まで遡ります。音楽が私を導いてくれた素晴らしい場所の中で、今年は日本ほど恋しく思ったところはありません。

残念なことに現在は、人生のあらゆることが以前より複雑で、私は日本への旅を断念しなければなりませんでした。この素晴らしいオーケストラとシューベルトとシュトラウスを演奏ができていたなら、それは今年だけではなく、いかなる時も私にとってハイライトとなっていたことでしょう。

私と共に仕事をしているロンドンと東京の素晴らしい仲間、そして都響のメンバーと事務局に感謝いたします。すべての方々が困難な状況の中、演奏会が実施できるよう、熱心に仕事に取り組んでくださったばかりのところ、直前にキャンセルとなったのです。このような演奏会に向けた準備が奏者にとってどれだけ大変なものか、準備を整えるためにすでにどれだけの時間を費やしたか存じています。そして他のいかなる所よりも日本の音楽愛好家は、演奏会をより理解し、より楽しむために準備し、勉強して演奏会に臨むことも知っています。なんと素晴らしいことでしょう！　皆様の労力に感謝し、そして私の状況が皆様を失望させてしまったことを深くお詫び申し上げます。

このような思いから私は、ロンドンと東京にいる私のチームに、都響と努力をして、できるだけ現実的な早い時期に一緒にこの演奏会を開催できるようお願いしました。

待ち遠しくてなりません！

皆様のご健康と素晴らしい音楽を、そして幸せな時間が訪れるようお祈り申し上げます。

近い将来、日本でお会いできること楽しみにしています。

Dear friends, musicians and public of the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra,

We have all missed so much in the last 16 months, and many have lost so much too. I can only speak as a musician and from my own experience, fully aware that many have suffered in ways far greater than my own. But it was with enormous sadness that I found myself obliged to cancel my trip to come and share music with you all this week. I have a deep admiration for Japan and Japanese musicians and music lovers that goes back more than 20 years. Of all the wonderful places that music allows me to travel I have missed nowhere this last year more than Japan.

Unfortunately every detail of life is more complicated in this moment than we are used to, and I had to renounce my trip to Tokyo. To have conducted Schubert and Strauss with this wonderful orchestra would have been a highlight for me, not only of this year but in any context.

I would like to say thank you to the amazing people who work with me in London and Tokyo, and to the staff and administration of TMSO. All of them worked so hard, in very difficult circumstances, to make these concerts possible only to see them cancelled at the last minute. I know how much work it is for musicians to prepare for a concert like this, and I know you would have given so much time already to being ready. I also know that, perhaps more than anywhere else, music lovers in Japan often prepare and study in advance to enhance their enjoyment and
understanding of a concert. What an amazing thing! I thank you all for your work and apologise deeply that my circumstances led to this disappointment.

For these reasons I have asked my team in London and Tokyo to work hard with TMSO to make sure we can play these concerts together as soon as is practically possible.

I cannot wait!
