　東京都交響楽団の新しい音楽監督として、皆様にご挨拶を申し上げます。
　今年、2015 年に都響創立50 周年を迎えるにあたり、シーズンのプログラム、招聘する指揮者、ソリストにも、記念イヤーに相応しい内容・陣容が揃いました。
　今年の定期演奏会のテーマは、「対照の妙味」と言って良いと思います。
　私の就任記念では、シュニトケ、マーラー、ベートーヴェンが並んでおります。この3 人の作曲家の作品は、実は交響曲作家として、相互に内面的な創造力と深遠さに於いて結ばれており、ゆえに都響の歴史と未来を自然と物語るプログラムともなっています。作曲家の肖像の最終回では、柴田南雄、武満徹、池辺晋一郎、諸先生の名作、大作を並べ、日本音楽史を俯瞰します。
　それ以外にもコントラストの激しいプログラムとして、ド・ビリー指揮　12 人の奏者による小オーケストラと大オーケストラが火花を散らすデュティユーの第2 交響曲とブラームスの田園的な交響曲第2 番。またオレグ・カエターニ指揮　ブリテンのブラスとパーカッションによる《ロシアの葬送》とそのロシアのテーマを取り入れて作曲された、ショスタコーヴィチ交響曲第11 番、などが代表的なものとしてあげられます。特に後者は、両作曲家が終生“戦争と死”に向き合っていたことにも思いを馳せることにもなる、出色のコンビネーション。あるいは、スウェーデン放送合唱団との共演も、都響定期の新境地です。
　新しい客演の指揮者に加え、都響となじみの深い指揮者による演奏会も充実したプログラムが並びました。特に、アラン・ギルバート指揮、自ら編纂した『ニーベルングの指環』管弦楽版、小泉和裕は第800 回定期で《家庭交響曲》を指揮。
　そして、エリアフ・インバルの、バーンスタイン作曲、交響曲第3 番《カディッシュ》などは、それぞれ、来シーズンのきわめて重要な音楽的祭典となることでしょう。
　今年11 月、都響は50 周年を記念して、ストックホルム、アムステルダム、ベルリン、ルクセンブルグ、エッセン、ウィーン、というヨーロッパ6 都市での海外ツアーを行います。
この楽旅に於いては、都響は、2020 年東京オリンピック・パラリンピックへ向けての、文化大使という役割も担っております。プログラムには、細川俊夫の新作、“砂浜に毎日のように立つ女性によって鎮魂のために捧げられる祈りの歌”、ドビュッシー作曲《海》などを並べ、日本を代表するオーケストラとして、懐の深い、立体的で創意に満ちた響きを届けて参りたいと思います。

It gives me great pleasure to extend greetings as the new music director of Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra (TMSO).
This year, TMSO has a wonderful lineup of season programs along with highly-esteemed conductors and soloists to celebrate its 50th anniversary.
I would say the theme of our subscription concerts this year is “the Charm of Contrast.”

My inaugural concert program will include Schnittke, Mahler and Beethoven. In fact, the works of these three composers are connected to each other in terms of inner creativity and profoundness as symphonists. Therefore, the program on their works spontaneously demonstrates the history and future of TMSO.

In addition to these wonderful concert programs by new guest conductors, we also have great programs by the conductors who are longtime friends of TMSO.
Of particular interest will be the orchestral version of “The Ring of Nibelung (Der Ring des Nibelungen)” conducted and arranged by Alan Gilbert, and the 800th Subscription Concert featuring Strauss’ “Sinfonia Domestica” directed by Kazuhiro Koizumi. Along with a concert on Berstein’s Symphony No.3 “Kaddish” conducted by Eliahu Inbal, these concerts are extremely significant during the upcoming season.

This coming November, TMSO will tour six European cities—Stockholm, Amsterdam, Berlin, Luxembourg, Essen and Vienna—to celebrate its 50th anniversary. On this tour, TMSO will also play a role as a cultural ambassador in preparation for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The tour program includes a new work by Toshio Hosokawa, “Prayer by a woman standing on a sandy beach every day,” and “La Mer (The Sea)” by Debussy. We are determined to present profound, deep and creative sound as the orchestra representing Japan.
