Alan GILBERT appointed Principal Guest Conductor (from April 2018)

The Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra (TMSO) is pleased to announce the
appointment of Alan Gilbert as Principal Guest Conductor (tenure: April 2018- March 2021)

Alan Gilbert has served as Music Director of New York Philharmonic, Principal Conductor (currently Conductor Laureate) of Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Principal Guest Conductor of Elbphilharmonie Orchester (NDR Sinfonieorchester Hamburg). He also guests conduct major orchestras of Europe regularly such as Berliner Philharmoniker and Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Highly acclaimed for his secure musicality and versatile activities, he will be taking up the post of Principal Conductor of Elbphilharmonie Orchester starting in September 2019.

His first appearance with TMSO was in July 2011 and his Mahler Symphony No. 5 in July 2016 was ardently received by the public. With his personality and his quest for musical exploration, he has established trust with the orchestra musicians and gave inspiring performances with diverse programs featuring Beethoven, Mahler to contemporary works.

In the 2018 season, we will remain active in offering fruitful concerts and present arts and culture to the world under the direction of Kazushi Ono, Music Director; Kazuhiro Koizumi, Honorary Conductor for Life; Eliahu Inbal, Conductor Laureate; joined by Alan Gilbert with our new partnership.

Alan Gilbert was Music Director of New York Philharmonic between 2009 and 2017. He encouraged the development of two series devoted to contemporary music: CONTACT! and NY PHIL BIENNIAL. Gilbert makes regular guest appearances with orchestras including Berliner Philharmoniker and Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Currently, he is Conductor Laureate of Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, and Director of Conducting and Orchestral Studies at Juilliard School. Gilbert will be inaugurated as Principal Guest Conductor of TMSO in April 2018, and Principal Conductor of NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester in September 2019.

Over the last years some of my happiest musical memories have been with this wonderful orchestra. Each time we have worked together we have found a special chemistry that creates energy through music in a way that allows us all to experience our shared humanity. It is a great pleasure to inform everyone, who supports the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, of the appointment of Alan Gilbert as TMSO Principal Guest Conductor. While we are aware that he is one of the world’s busiest conductors, we feel proud of his voluntary decision to spend special time with TMSO. As we have Alan, a new strength join our team, I reaffirm my determination together with all members of TMSO to continue to bring you the joy of music.
